Warning Signs
Experts say to look for these signs:
- Signs of serious depression, including a persistent "low" mood, pessimism, sleeping too much or too little, hopelessness, desperation, anxiety, tension, withdrawal from friends and family, poor performance at school or work
- Increased alcohol and/or drug use
- Recent risky or impulsive behavior, such as driving too fast or spending too much
- Making statements like, "I wish I could die," threatening suicide or openly admiring suicidal behaviors, or showing themes about death and dying in artwork, music or written works
- Making a plan, including giving away prized possessions, suddenly buying a gun or obtaining other means of suicide, such as poison or medications
- Saying goodbye, including thanking people for "being a good friend"
- Unexpected rage or anger
- Sudden changes in mood or behavior, positive or negative, such as a sudden euphoric or calm mood after a long depression, or loss of interest in favorite activities
